9 kids out of 20 have flat zeros across the board in my class because they don't want to do any work. All they do is watch 5-10 second videos, swipe, and repeat. Admin doesn't want parent backlash for banning phones. I'm not allowed to have students admit their laziness or explain their behavior in writing. Parents stick up for their kids saying they just need a break or didn't get enough sleep last night. There's no accountability and no winning here. I can't do my job. I can handle disrespect

don't know what to do with apathy. "Put your name on this paper and I'll give you 50 percent." "nah I'm good." "Can I let you work on something for another class instead?" "I'll just take a zero." and my class is fun! It's a hands on, project building, team based stem class!

They know admin will require us to pass them for numbers and funding. We are failing our kids, ourselves, and our country's future. ns. I feel bad for the other 10 kids that actually try, but have to share a room with these lazy b They're in different leagues and should be separated if this is how students are by 11th grade. Yeesh.

Boomer Teacher · 22 hr. ago Parents stick up for their kids saying they . . . didn't get enough sleep last night. Well, that part is true. Their kids fell asleep at 2 AM watching TikToks. 1.2k Reply Share

Aristodemus400 - 23 hr. ago Find a school that bans phones and backs up teachers and let them know upon exit why you left. Reply Share 547 PlebsUrbana 22 hr. ago I have said to admin, students, and parents that the day my admin decides to allow students to be on their phones in class will be the day I walk out and quit without notice. I refuse to work at a school like that ever again.

Actual_Tap6378 · 20 hr. ago We just started a no phone policy. Kids can use their phones during lunch. There hasn't been as much parent pushback as some thoughts. Even students some students say it helps them. Middle school has been no phone always, it just got extended to high school. Reply Share 87

sporadicOverlook - 22 hr. ago I have thought about the phone issue so much. Mass addiction is what it is. No one has addressed the dangers of it (to them specifically) and honestly I think schools need to adapt to teach about that, along with deceptive imagery and other techniques that fool the online masses easily. Your 11th graders are literally the first kids ever to have access to such insane tech and constant short form media. Tumblr Facebook kik etc that millennials had were not this addic

I would also really like to see how a flip phone only policy would work. Phone model picked out by the school. I think that would have some middle ground with parents and solve a lot of the in class issues. Discipline and standards need to be fixed but that's talked about enough lol. I know I'm not supposed to be in here but I'm a student. Just a student who is very very concerned about our education system and these kids brains. I can feel the white brain matter då,ing. Brain rot should literal

bevespi 22 hr. ago I read this sub as it gets suggested to me. I'm in medicine, not teaching, but have respect for many of my educators because I needed their knowledge and guidance to get me where I am. All that said, regardless of topic, will say all the time, you need to be paid more. Back to the topic... I liken this education apathy to medicine and how it can be fixed. Unfortunately, not a great option. But in my opinion only the nuclear option is left, total overhaul. We all have

great ideas, but the k-12+ education behemoth and medical behemoth won't change with small uprisings. It's. All. Got. To. Be. Burnt. Down. We need a Phoenix (Not Univ of...). Reply Share 144

drdhuss- 23 hr. ago edited 21 hr. ago I attempted to try to coach a STEM/LEGO robotics team for the past two years. It is impossible. As soon as the kids get the least bit uncomfortable out come the phones and no work gets done. Tried banning the phones and kids just didn't come anymore. It was pretty bad. Sucks too as my kid enjoys it but most of the competitions require at least a two person team and there is too large of an age gap between himself and his sister.

The super frustrating part is that the team had the potential both years to be world class/advance. On this year's FLL tournament they scored 470 (could have gotten 500 but nobody they played against did the scene change). They did not advance as we.cpuldnt get the team members to really care about the rest of the competition that wasn't the robot game. They didn't even score in the top 3. In fact the winner scored less than 300 on the robot game and the next highest score was 375. Wasn't even c

Particular-Panda-465 22 hr. ago Our school district doesn't allow phones and I still have a lot of students with a string of zeros. Phones make it worse, but they aren't the only problem. Reply Share 25 Money-Cauliflower330 · 21 hr. ago Yeah, my school doesn't allow phones. Kids will look at a chemistry problem and just immediately give up and check out. I find myself constantly saying. You can do this! I think apathy is the real problem.

Sad-Measurement-2204 21 hr. ago No, because they probably still have plenty of screen time at home. And when they needed to be developing reading, reasoning, and writing skills, they probably had screen time instead. Reply Share 9

Alderan 16 hr. ago Except when I was going through school if someone didn't have the skills to do the assignment, for whatever reason, they weren't just allowed to ignore the assignment with no repercussions. They got too many zeros and they got held back. Is it the changes to focusing on graduation rates that have caused that shift? 6 Reply Share

OieOhNoNo 21 hr. ago Some parents and students argue their kids need it for emergencies. Luckily, I'm allowed to take phones but a lot of times I get yelled at, Cu ed at, and ted. It's so funny because they eventually just hand me their phones anyways. Occasionally, a student will refuse and I just write them up and they get detention or have to come to school on Saturday morning to pick up trash and then the next time they just hand it to me. I only take them if they are on them when they shoul

Some teachers are too afraid to take them from students because they don't want to be yelled at, cu d at, and th ned but I don't really care since taking them is the only way to get them to focus. They are so attached and glued to these phones it's ridiculous. Kids have attitudes but they'll get over it. A lot of them now tell me when someone is on their phone when they shou
